Q&A with Charlie Parker – DiversCity mentee

Q&A with future trainee Charlie Parker

About me

Name: Charlie Parker

Degree: BA (Hons) English Literature with Human Rights (but graduated in 2009 and have been managing health and social care services in the charity sector since)

Interests: Volunteering, running, cooking, aviation

Favourite place on earth: 35,000 ft in the sky – I love to fly (perhaps not technically ‘on earth’!)

Highlight of the year so far: Being accepted onto the PwC Legal Vacation Scheme

The word that describes me best: Busy

Biggest inspiration: Anyone who works tirelessly to achieve what they want and achieves it without compromising their values and remaining authentic

Your top inspirational quote: ‘I swear to the Lord, I still can’t see, why democracy means, everybody but me” – Langston Hughes. This quote reminds me that there is still so much work to do in making the world a better place and prompts me to play my part in this progression

About DiversCity in Law

1st heard of DiversCity in Law: A friend from BPP University who had attended before told me about the event and recommended I go along

When attended DiversCity in Law event: 2014 and 2016

Favourite part of the day: Getting to meet such a diverse cohort of practicing lawyers from whom to garner inspiration and advice

Top learning of the day: The best way to overcome discrimination in the legal sector is to be the best lawyer I can be, and show that LGBT people make equally good lawyers as our non-LGBT colleagues

Favourite part of being a mentee: When Stuart (my mentor) cuts through some of the more vague advice from careers advisors and tells me how things actually happen in the real world

Describe the DiversCity in Law event in 3 words: Valuable; insightful; fun

Any advice you want to share to future attendees of DiversCity in law: Be sure to sign up to the mentoring scheme
